Back there in 2000-2001, everyone around here who listens to country music believed our town of Nowhere finally made it big time. Country singer Dwight Yoakam had a hit song called 1000 miles From Nowhere. It was the talk of the town. Even Father MacDonald preached a sermon about it. He titled it: Fame. Although most everyone was certain this song would finally put Nowhere on the map, Father Mac spoke how fame would only steal one's soul. His point was this: productivity and creativity is what matters in a person’s life. Well, right after church, I raced home to do a little creativity of my own. I pulled my old Randy McNally road map from the shelf, measured off a piece of string equaling 1,000 miles on the scale and tied it to a pin. Then I stuck the pin right there on Nowhere. With a pencil attached to the other end of the taught string, I drew the circumference around Nowhere to see just exactly where Mr. Yoakam was singing about. Other than Nowhere, of course. The first line of the song is: “I’m a thousand miles from Nowhere and there’s no place I’d rather be.” Well, let me tell you Mr. Yoakam was nowhere to be found in Arizona. Rather, 1,000 miles from Nowhere is just plain far away. Here are some possibilities: Texarkana,AR., Miami, OK., Pittsburg, KS., Westpoint, NE., Woonsockat, S.D., Plummer, ID., or maybe even Yakima, WA. By the sound of it, I'm glad I'm Somewhere in Nowhere. More on Mr. Yoakam and his connection to Nowhere later.
When You're Nowhere, Life Is Good.
In The Beginning
You see, I and five brothers were raised on an Iowa farm 50 years ago by two incredible parents. But then, I up and moved to Arizona to become a photographer. This profession has been exceptionally good to me. Depending on the workload and the season, I reside in a number of spots: Nowhere, Tempe or Flagstaff, Arizona or Goldfield, Iowa or Puerto PeƱasco, Mexico. As a part-time resident of the tiny town called Nowhere, I have a unique perspective on the folks who live and work in a place which time has passed by. And, I'd like to share this fascinating place with you. When I'm somewhere other than Nowhere, I'm likely on assignment either for a corporate client or Arizona Highways magazine. All along, you'll come to know Nowhere, Arizona and its common people with uncommon problems and personal achievements. Early dispatches offer some background into the town itself while newer dispatches will reveal the character of the townsfolk and my photo travels.

1000 Miles From Nowhere
